February 2013
Dear Summit Attendees:
On behalf of the Boards of Trustees of the co-sponsoring institutions, we welcome you to the 2013 Black,
Brown & College Bound Summit.
Common among all institutions of higher learning is the fact that many young adults leave college or
university before achieving their academic goal: graduating with a degree. The disproportionately high
attrition rates among African American and Latino males are of particular concern because of the loss of
talent and productivity for our communities and our nation. Without the success of degree completion for
this cohort of young adults, we all fail. For many of our institutions academic persistence through to degree
completion for the African American and Latino males is a key measure of our institutional accountability.
The Black, Brown & College Bound Summit provides an opportunity for all of us to strengthen our
collaborative efforts to address our shared concerns. We unite in the effort through this national Summit
to provide avenues for students, faculty, administrators, staff, and all other concerned parties in the
educational enterprise to come together for mutual exchange of ideas and to learn about several excellent
innovative programs and best practices at our respective institutions. The distinguished annual Summits
have proven to be appropriate venues for similar conversations in the past, and the annual 2013 Summit will
move the dialogue to the next level.
Enjoy the Summit, participate actively, contribute at your highest level, and most importantly, become
change agents who will empower all students to overcome barriers and achieve success.
