The HCC Apprenticeship programs are part of a federally structured training system in which the apprentice works full-time during the day for a sponsoring employer learning the skills of the trade, and completes classroom related instruction in the evening or on weekends.
There are no tuition or fees for the classroom-related instruction. The apprentice may incur some costs for tools, books, and materials needed for the trade.
The work of a Fire Sprinkler Fitter consists of the phases of the installation of fire protection and fire control systems. Responsibilities include unloading and installing all piping and tubing apparatus and equipment such as:
- Overhead and underground water mains
- Fire hydrants and hydrant mains
- Hose houses
- Standpipes and hose connections with sprinkler and alarm systems
- Tanks and pumps connected thereto
The technologies in this industry also include CO2, Cardox1 and smoke/fire detection systems, emulsifiers, fog and fog foam, and dry chemical systems.

Apprentice programs are not open access. The Apprenticeship programs and sponsoring employers establish the minimum qualifications for acceptance into the training program. The minimum qualifications typically require the individual to:
- be at least 18 years of age,
- possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency,
- hold a valid driver license,
- have reliable transportation to the jobsite and classroom and
- be physically able to perform the essential duties of the trade
