Commercial Electrician Apprenticeship

Commercial Electrician Apprenticeship ( 720 Clock Hours) | Part of the Architecture and Building Trades Subject

The HCC Apprenticeship programs are part of a federally structured training system in which the apprentice works full-time during the day for a sponsoring employer learning the skills of the trade, and completes classroom related instruction in the evening or on weekends.

There are no tuition or fees for the classroom-related instruction. The apprentice may incur some costs for tools, books, and materials needed for the trade.

What Electricians Do

Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical power, communications, lighting, and control systems.

Work Environment

Almost all electricians work full time. Work schedules may include evenings and weekends. Overtime is common.

How to Become an Electrician

Most electricians learn through an apprenticeship, but some start out by attending a technical school. Most states require electricians to be licensed.

Pay

The median annual wage for electricians was $56,180 in May 2019.

Apprentice programs are not open access.  The Apprenticeship programs and sponsoring employers establish the minimum qualifications for acceptance into the training program. The minimum qualifications typically require the individual to:

  • be at least 18 years of age,
  • possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency,
  • hold a valid driver license,
  • have reliable transportation to the jobsite and classroom and
  • be physically able to perform the essential duties of the trade
