Benefits of Enrolling in Honors

Intro

There are numerous benefits to being a part of the Honors Program at HCC. An Honors education distinguishes your applications for four-year universities and jobs, and you will join a network of students and faculty who are committed and focused. Listed below are more than a few benefits that students enjoy in the Honors Program.

In the Classroom

Smaller Classes

Honors courses are limited to 15 students. These smaller class sizes allow students the optimal opportunity to connect with their professors and classmates.

Learning through Experience

Honors courses incorporate a more hands-on approach to learning called experiential learning. Through field trips and volunteer service, this approach is meant to engage the students and educate outside the classroom.

Faculty

Just as students are specially selected to join the Honors Program, so too are the faculty who teach the courses. Every faculty member is assigned and reviewed by the Director of the Honors Program to maintain their effectiveness. Additionally, Honors faculty attend regular workshops and participate in other professional development for the program.

Academic Planning

Specialized Academic Advising

The Honors Program has its own academic advisor to work with students each semester as they select their classes, determine their intended major, and prepare for HCC graduation and transfer.

Priority Registration

Honors students in good standing are offered priority registration, providing the opportunity for first selection of courses, class times, and professors.

Transfer/Scholarship Assistance

The Director of the Honors Program works with Honors students to negotiate scholarships and transfer opportunities on their behalf. See where Honors students go next.

Study Abroad Opportunities

Students have the opportunity to travel internationally each year. Most recent travel has included Guatemala, Netherlands, Ireland, and Cuba.

Leadership Opportunities

The Honors Program has many opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills, from providing assistance to the Honors Office staff to serving as club officers or board members. All Honors students take a specially designed Leadership Course, IDH 2931, which is required their first term.

Study Lounges

Each campus has a study lounge designated exclusively for Honors students. Each lounge is equipped with computers, printers with free printing, a microwave, refrigerator, tables, chairs, and sofas.
