NOUVEAU SUD | VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS GUEST ARTIST SERIES
TBA

The Nouveau Sud Circus Project has embarked on a new creative journey to address an issue that we are called to respond to as artists and as a company centered on people of the global majority -  gun violence and how we are affected by it. For over two decades we have seen an increase in the unfortunate and terrifying events of mass shootings at a national level. Churches, public spaces, concert venues, universities, elementary schools... and the list continues. Nouveau Sud uses the structure of a series of vignettes, utilizing their signature acrobatic language and the contemporary circus arts as a vehicle to look for answers to our communal recurring questions: Why? How do we protect us all? Do we want this? Can we stop it?

Forty years as a practitioner of the form, an aged Breaker will set out far beyond shallow waters in search of “The Big Fish.”

Skiff is a new, evening-length work featuring Raphael Xavier and 2 guest dancers Micah "Spadez" Spader and TBD. Raphael Xavier conceived and directed Skiff in which he contextualizes his journey through the lens of Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea,” and Winslow Homer’s iconic painting “The Gulf Stream.” Created with original text and spoken word that is interwoven with Hemingway, Xavier draws parallels between the fisherman’s search and his own journey to build a dance career utilizing the art form of Breaking. Skiff features elements practiced by Xavier, merging storytelling, spoken word, and Breaking.
